July 2008 Community Update

Beechview

Splish Splash!
Beechview is getting a splash park. The City has offered $250,000 for the construction of a playground with features that spray water for children to play in. This will be an additional recreational amenity to add to the quality of life for families in the neighborhood. Community Leaders United for Beechview is holding a meeting to present two options for the location of the splash park to the community on Thursday, July 17, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. in McCann Hall at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Councilman Jim Motznik and Representative Chelsa Wagner have been active in discussion about the park and are helping to promote the meeting.

Community Mural
The Beechview Mural Project began with an introductory meeting on Saturday, June 21st. Interested neighborhood residents listened to several experienced muralists explain the process. Attendees signed up to participate in the Beechview Mural Steering Committee. The first meeting of that Committee will be on Saturday, July 19th (time and location TBD).

Streetface Program
The City of Pittsburgh’s Urban Redevelopment Authority has money dedicated to Beechview for commercial business owners and tenants to improve their storefronts through the Streetface program.  URA staff attended the Beechview Merchants Association meeting to explain the program to local businesses and to invite them to submit applications. If you are a Beechview business owner interested in taking advantage of this program, please contact Quianna Wasler, Mainstreet Development Specialist, at 412-255-6550 or qwasler@ura.org.

Brookline

Renew Brookline
Renew Pittsburgh is a new “all-volunteer, non-partisan organization to promote renewing Pittsburgh from within.” It came to Brookline on June 28th for a day of service.

Renew Pittsburgh Director, Kevin Acklin had the following to say about it:
“We held our first event last Saturday in Brookline, a great Pittsburgh neighborhood. Joined by several volunteers from Brookline and from around the City, we cleaned up Brookline Park, picked up garbage along Brookline Boulevard, handled several home projects for several elderly neighbors around Brookline, and repainted the benches and iron fence surrounding the historic cannon war memorial on Brookline Boulevard. I want to thank the good people of Brookline for their hospitality and for helping our efforts to volunteer in such a great Pittsburgh neighborhood!”

Neighborhood folks reported that a lot of work got done that day. Thanks to Renew Pittsburgh for the help.

Upcoming Events in Brookline:
